Plan Well

Based on your Research Question – you have already given quite a lot of thought to specifically what you are going to compare/explore and what artists/artworks you are looking at.

You should be able to create a basic 3 segment plan that will organize your research and help you figure out how to approach writing the actual essay.   (Save the introduction and conclusion for later……)

NOTE: As you work, make note of every URL you are visiting.  For art, Journal Articles are important – but they are challenging to find.

An easy way to start is  google searching.  The key with google searching is to choose authentic sites.

Johnny’s Blog on Art =NOT A RELIABLE SOURCE

Metropolitan Museum of Art  = RELIABLE SOURCE

You may start looking at wikipedia to begin your search. However wikipedia is NOT A GOOD SOURCE.  I suggest using it to get started – but scroll down to the references listed – and use the sources listed.  Those will be much stronger sources.

YOUR INITIAL PLAN

List the 3 Artists/Artworks that you plan to explore based on your RQ.   Then begin to research each artwork, looking for information that will support your topic.

ARTWORK 1

Brief Bio:  Where is the artist from?  Style/Medium of work? Purpose and Function of Work?

Historical/Socio-Historical  –

This will be mostly based on research.  Make notes and add URLs as you go.  You are looking for at least 3-4 different events/issues that will have impact on the artwork.  It is best if you can find articles that specifically discuss these issues in relation to the artist.

LOOKING FOR: Possible influences from culture at the time – what is happening at the time the artwork is created – that may affect the artwork.  Look at big events on the world scene and seemingly insignificant events from the town that they artist is working in.

Artistic Influences

This will be mostly based on research.  Make notes and add URLs as you go.  You are looking for at least 3-4 different artists/artworks that will have impact on the artwork.  It is best if you can find articles that specifically discuss these issues in relation to the artist.

LOOKING FOR: Who has influenced the artist in general? And specifically in this work?  Who might the artist know/socialize with/be inspired by?  What art movements/medium explorations may influence the artwork

Analysis

This will be mostly in your own words – with your own observations.  However, you may be able to find (if your artwork is well known enough) artwork analysis’ already done on the work.  You can make note of them and use them to support your own analysis.

LOOKING FOR:  Refer to Feldman’s Analysis (guided questions to start: http://share.sis.org.cn/aatki1/art-analysis/) Use Art Vocabulary (EOA/POD) and analyse the work DEEPLY.
